2016 Broads-Only Sunday Brunch 11-12:30
NOVELIZE! Thinking outside the Hollywood box
Come for brunch and discussion with Susan diRende, author/artist/filmmaker and Founder of the Broad Humor Film Festival for some thinking outside the Hollywood "box." She will share the lessons in serendipity she's encountered since leaving LA two years ago for parts unknown. Among the happy "accidents" was turning her "unproduceable" scifi farce script, Unpronounceable, into a novella that found a publisher and is now a book in its own right.
She will share what she’s learned and widen the discussion to what women can do to resist the sense of failure that the structural inequities of Hollywood cause in us. After 15 years in the LA entertainment community, the respect and welcome she encountered in the print community, especially its receptivity to the work of women, felt almost surreal. Susan will make a case for adding “/author” to your self-description and broadening your idea of how to get your stories out there.
she will discuss whether you might consider taking your screenplay and turning it into a novel. It is not easy, but you’ve already done more than half the work by finishing. Plus, as a script writer, you’ve already mastered some aspects of storytelling that others have difficulty learning: beats, conflict, character voice, plot. It’s all there. Setting and style, description and interior life, those you’ll have to add. But I’m betting that many of those things are there in the movie-in-your-head. You simply are not allowed to put them in a screenplay.
You can find Susan’s scifi farce, Unpronounceable, here on Amazon.
